Hello everyone!
We all know that choosing a Professor can make or break your entire career. In Korea, there are three "gods" - Doctor, Lawyer, and Professor.
Every word Professor says has power. If you have some complaints with your professor and you complain it to the Office of International Affairs (OIA), they can do nothing about it. Professors in Korea has superior authority. So, choose wisely.
During the interview phase in my case since I want to enter Environmental Engineering, I wasn't able to choose a professor, unfortunately.
It just happened that I was already accepted into the lab that I thought the ONLY lab to fulfill my MS Envi. Eng'g course --- silly, I know.
I never thought about the University having a lot of different kinds of labs because in my college days, we only have one lab specializing all types of areas - wastewater, solid waste, air, etc.... we just have one lab!
So I thought when I came to Korea, I'll be joining the most appropriate lab for me. And yes, it is appropriate as I am dealing with wastewater BUT is not the only lab that does wastewater-related researches, but there are other labs, too! There's also the one I like - Climate Change Mitigation Lab which was more related to my job before I resigned and pursued my MS.
So, yeah, not knowing your professor beforehand and what kind of professor he is was kinda stressful! So here I am giving you some tips:
1) Download the Everytime (에브리타임) app. Since you're not registered to the Uni's system and does not have ID yet, make friends with UNDERGRADS in the uni that you are going to. Visit the school beforehand / earlier after your Korean Language Course, and ask help also from OIA.
The friends that you made could help you by logging in their credentials on their phone and searching the PROFESSOR'S NAME in the app and voila! --- you will see his/her ranking.
In my case, the professor that I was into was rated the lowest --- no wonder! based on my experiences, sadly, yeah, I should've changed professors as early as I could but I was trapped in my situation. I also asked him 2x if I can transfer into another lab but he kept me in his lab haha. He stopped me from doing it.
In Korea, it's like politics wherein if a student transfers to another professor, it means the professor is bad --- it can have a negative image on the professor so yeah, now I get it.
2) Research about labs that are available. Choose at least 3 that interests you. Email them for their availability and meet them in person for you to be able to decide well. Choose wisely. Your future depends on them!
That's it, future GKS recipients!
Fighting!
If anything happens or have faced injustice, always report to OIA even though there are lesser chances that they'll intervene but still report it to let them know!!!
God bless!
