GKS FAQs: Recommendation Letters

A lot of you are worried about the recommendation letter. I made this post to help you become calm and at ease. Recommendation letters are a crucial part of the scholarship application process but don't let that stress you out! Here are some information and tips on how you can prepare and complete your RLs.

1. How to Start?

First, you may use the previous GKS Form for this section ONLY. This is to help you become prepared as they usually open the scholarship application around 2nd week of February and then closes about 3rd week of March. Last year, they posted February 11~March 15, 2020. The deadline depends if you are EMBASSY TRACK (depends on the Korean Embassy in your country) and if you are UNIVERSITY TRACK (depends on the university you are applying to).

2. Go to your previous university - print out that form and ask your professors to fill in the details and attach additional paper for his recommendation.

  • Ask your professor to place it in an envelope - once your professor is done, he/she should place the letter inside the envelope, seal it, and sign it at the back in the left, middle, and right corner.
For Embassy Track: Three (3) sets of Recommendation Letters from two (2) professors
For University Track: Only one (1) set of Recommendation Letters from two (2) professors.

NOTE: DO NOT ASK THE PROFESSOR IN THE UNIVERSITY IN KOREA IN WHICH YOU WANT TO APPLY BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW YOU PERSONALLY. THIS ALSO DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL PASS THE SCHOLARSHIP.

I've known so many applicants who did exactly that but still did not get accepted. You should only ask the professors who know you personally so that they can easily recommend you and write many things (good things) about you - your strengths, weaknesses, and attitude.
